Knotless braids by HAIRflow by KD Sandy Springs Atlanta

How long do knotless braids last?

Knotless braids are one of the most requested styles at HAIRflow by KD, and the number one question clients ask before sitting in the chair is always the same: how long will they last?

The honest answer is 4 to 8 weeks — but where your install falls in that range depends on several things you can actually control.

What affects how long knotless braids last?

The biggest factor is how well your hair was prepared before the install. Clean, moisturised hair holds a style significantly longer than dry or product-heavy hair. I always recommend coming in with freshly washed and detangled hair for this reason.

The size of the braids matters too. Smaller knotless braids tend to last longer because there is more surface contact with your natural hair. Jumbo braids are faster to install but the style loosens more quickly near the roots.

Your hair care routine after the install makes the biggest difference of all. Clients who moisturise their scalp regularly, sleep with a satin bonnet, and avoid excessive manipulation consistently get 6 to 8 weeks from their install. Clients who skip these steps often see the style looking tired after 3 to 4 weeks.

How to make your knotless braids last longer

Moisturise your scalp every 2 to 3 days using a light oil like jojoba or sweet almond oil. Focus on the roots where new growth appears first.

Sleep with a satin bonnet or on a satin pillowcase every night. Cotton absorbs moisture from your hair and causes frizz at the roots faster than anything else.

Keep your edges clean. Washing your hairline with a gentle shampoo every week or two keeps the front of your style looking fresh without disturbing the rest of the install.

Avoid pulling your hair back tightly into a ponytail or bun. This puts unnecessary tension on the roots and causes your braids to loosen faster at the front.

When should you take them down?

The honest answer is when the new growth at your roots starts to cause tension or discomfort. Leaving knotless braids in beyond 8 weeks can cause matting at the root and makes the take-down process harder on your hair.

If your braids still look great at 6 weeks but feel slightly loose, a quick re-tightening at the front edges can buy you another 2 weeks without a full reinstall.
